Steelers left guard Ramon Foster, the senior member of the offensive line, was taken off the field Saturday afternoon on a cart after suffering what coach Mike Tomlin termed a “lower-body injury.”
Foster, who is entering his 10th season with the team and is in the final year of his contract, was injured while blocking on a passing play from Landry Jones to Antonio Brown. The injury happened early in practice, the first one in pads of training camp for the Steelers.
Foster remained on the ground for several moments and then favored his right knee as he was assisted into a cart. He was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.
Linebacker Bud Dupree said another player fell onto Foster’s leg.
Tomlin said he did not see the injury and didn’t want to speculate on the severity.
“I’m simply going to make the necessary adjustments accordingly and, more importantly than that, to work our tails off to make sure that we’re making this as safe as we can for them through this process,” Tomlin said.
Teammates surrounded Foster as he remained on the ground for several moments. Some knelt in prayer.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and injured linebacker Ryan Shazier rushed to Foster’s side. Roethlisberger rode on the cart as Foster was removed from the field.
It was the second major injury involving an offensive lineman since the end of last season. In organized team activities, tackle Jerald Hawkins, who was expected to be the top backup this season, suffered a season-ending knee injury.
The Steelers offensive line had remained relatively healthy in recent years, with all five starters entering their third full year together.
Foster, 32, is entering his eighth season as a starter. He has started 14 games each of the past two seasons.
“Ramon has been doing this for a long time and doing it at a high level,” Tomlin said. “He’s a core member of the group, obviously.”
B.J. Finney is the top backup guard on the roster. He has seven career starts, including four at left guard the past two seasons because of injuries to Foster.
Asked if Finney can be a core starter, Tomlin responded: “He’s proven that over the last couple of years when given an opportunity to play.”
The only other guard with NFL experience on the Steelers roster is Matt Feiler, who also has played tackle. Feiler made his first NFL start last season in the regular-season finale against Cleveland when he played right guard in place of a rested David DeCastro.
The only other pure guard on the 90-man camp roster is Chris Schleuger, a rookie undrafted free agent from UAB.
