WPIAL junior high wrestling tournament starts Friday

Wrestling fans can get a glimpse into the future Friday and Saturday at the ninth annual WPIAL Junior Wrestling Championships at Norwin.

Action begins Friday and concludes Saturday and features more than 58 teams and more than 620 wrestlers from around the WPIAL.

“When we first started the tournament, we began with 28 teams,” tournament director Andy Phipps said. “Junior high wrestling ends this weekend, and in the past it would end with matches. We wanted to have a tournament so we could actually have a true end to the season.”

There are 18 weight classes, and the tournament is open to wrestles in grades seven, eight and nine.

“We’ve had teams from outside the WPIAL inquire about entering in the tournament,” Phipps said. “We just wanted to limit it to teams from the WPIAL. We’ve more than doubled in size since we started.”

Phipps said the goal is to get every team (82) in the WPIAL to enter squads.

Action begins at 3:45 p.m. Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
