Community invited to learn CPR

The Medical Rescue Team South is offering community education programs next month and encouraging the public to participate in the programs that teach life-saving skills.

Professional Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation classes will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 10; adult CPR classes will be offered at 6:30 p.m.

Aug. 19; and infant/child CPR classes will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Adult and infant CPR classes also will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and 10.

The professional CPR class costs $45, and the adult and child classes will cost $30. Pre-registration is required, but discounts are available for a combination of classes.

Keystone Oaks schools

The Keystone Oaks School District is accepting nominations for its Wall of Fame program that honors and recognizes extraordinary accomplishments of past graduates.

Eligible candidates will have graduated from either Keystone Oaks High School or Dormont High School at least five years ago. Those chosen for inductions may be either living or deceased and will have exemplified outstanding professional or personal dedication in making a significant contribution to society, the community or to their respective profession.

The deadline for 2003 nominations is March 15. Nomination forms are available through the offices of the five schools in the district. They also can be obtained through central administration by calling (412) 571-6005 or from the Web site, www.kosd.org .

Avella

State Sen. Jane Earll, an Erie County Republican and candidate for Pennsylvania lieutenant governor, and Paul Snatchko, a McDonald Republican running for the state House in the 46th District, will appear today at the Avella Heritage Festival.

The candidates are expected to be at the festival from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

Upper St. Clair

Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, Painters Run Road in Upper St. Clair will be closed between Bridge Street and Cedar Boulevard.

The posted detour will follow Robb Hollow Road and Kelso Road to Bower Hill Road, Route 19 and Gilkeson Road.

The road will remain closed until December during the replacement of two small bridges as part of the Painters Run Road reconstruction project.

Painters Run Road also will be widened to four lanes between Robb Hollow Road and Cedar Boulevard.

ASTCO Construction of Pittsburgh is undertaking the $2.8 million project.

West Mifflin

This is the last week for the West Mifflin playground program, and Friday will be a half day at Community Park on Bettis Road. The playground will close at noon.

Tuesday by noon is the deadline to sign up for Thursday's field trip to Mineral Beach in Finleyville, Washington County. Stop at Pavilion 2 at the park, and talk to Matthew Kostovny or Natalie Pollak, call (412) 401-9318, or e-mail the playground program at WMPGMM@hotmail.com .

Wednesday is Movie under the Stars night with the film "Spy Kids" running at 9 p.m. at the park.

Washington

Strabane Trails Village, an independent living residence under construction for seniors, will sponsor an open house ice cream social from noon to 4 p.m. today.

Seniors and their families can tour model apartments during the open house. When construction is completed, the village will offer 123 apartments.

Strabane Trails is the latest UPMC Retirement Village. Others are in Penn Hills, Monroeville, Scott Township, Greensburg and McCandless Township.

UPMC is developing Strabane Trails in partnership with The Washington Hospital. The village is off Manifold Road, on Wellness Way, across from the hospital's Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center.

Canonsburg

Greater Canonsburg Public Library invites kids in grade school and middle school to events this month.

  • Harry Potter's belated birthday party will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 9. Those who plan to attend must have completed first grade and read at least one Harry Potter book or seen the movie. Registration is required.

  • Tie-dye T-shirt day will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 16. This activity is for middle school students, including those who are going to middle school this fall. Those attending are asked to bring a white T-shirt and a hanger. Registration is required.

  • The library also will partner with California University of Pennsylvania in presenting Fantastic Family Fun Week at Southpointe Center the week of Aug. 5. Reading Day is Aug. 6, when the library will offer a session from 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 8 to 12 and a session from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for teens and adults.

  • Canonsburg General Hospital will offer a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation class from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7.

    Instructors certified by the American Heart Association will teach adult, heart-saver and one-person CPR, as well as techniques for dealing with an obstructed airway.

    The class will be conducted in the hospital's McNary Conference Center, 100 Medical Blvd., off Route 519, near Interstate 79's Houston Exit.

    Registration and a $25 fee are required.

    Peters Township

    The parks and recreation department will present a free concert for teens from 2 to 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the outdoor stage in Peterswood Park on Meredith Drive, off Bebout Road.

    First Place Losers, Spork and 1/2, Fear of Gray, Transition and Fullproof are the bands scheduled to play.

    All teenagers are welcome and refreshments will be available for purchase.

    Region

    The American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania will sponsor "Camp Huff 'n Puff" for children 8 through 13 with mild to severe asthma from Aug. 15 through 18 at the Jumonville Conference and Retreat Center in Hopwood.

    Staffed by medical volunteers, the camp will feature asthma self-management classes and traditional camping activities. Tuition is $100, and scholarships are available for first-time campers.
