Downtown merchants will kick off the holiday-shopping season today with Light Up Night festivities throughout the Golden Triangle.
Events include the noon dedication of the Pittsburgh Creche at U.S. Steel Plaza; live entertainment from 4:45 to 9:45 p.m. at Market Square; a lighting ceremony at 8:45 p.m. for the Tree of Lights at Point State Park ; and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. at the Point. Many of the displays will be open through Jan. 1, when the celebration culminates in the annual First Night festivities.

To accommodate the estimated 100,000 people expected to head Downtown, a number of streets will be closed. In some instances, the Port Authority must detour its service.
