Light Up Night events to close some streets

Downtown merchants will kick off the holiday-shopping season today with Light Up Night festivities throughout the Golden Triangle. Events include the noon dedication of the Pittsburgh Creche at U.S. Steel Plaza; live entertainment from 4:45 to 9:45 p.m. at Market Square; a lighting ceremony at 8:45 p.m. for the Tree of Lights at Point State Park ; and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. at the Point. Many of the displays will be open through Jan. 1, when the celebration culminates in the annual First Night festivities. For a complete list of Light Up Night activities visit: www.downtownpittsburgh.com . To accommodate the estimated 100,000 people expected to head Downtown, a number of streets will be closed. In some instances, the Port Authority must detour its service. A complete list of schedule changes is available at www.ridegold.com , or by calling the Port Authority Service Center at (412) 442-2000. The following streets will be closed:

10 a.m. to 9 p.m. — Eastbound Liberty Avenue, from Gateway Tower 4 to Commonwealth Place 1 to 9 p.m. — Streets surrounding Market Square, including Market, Graeme and Delray streets and McMasters Way 3 to 9 p.m. — Liberty Avenue, from Fifth Avenue Extension to Stanwix Street; Penn Avenue, from Cecil Way to Stanwix; and Stanwix, between the Stanwix Street parking garage and Fourth Avenue. The garage will remain open. 7 to 8 p.m. — Smithfield Street, between Forbes and Fifth avenues.
