Wild Things game suspended

The Washington Wild Things game against the Traverse City Beach Bums was suspended in the middle of the second inning because of rain with the Beach Bums leading, 2-1. The game will be completed when the Wild Things travel to Traverse city for a three-game series July 26-28. The Wild Things begin a three-game series against the Evansville Otters tonight.

College basketball

The College of Charleston hired Gregg Marshall as its men's basketball coach yesterday, hoping he can help the Cougars again become a prominent mid-major program.

Pro basketball

In Phoenix, Cappie Pondexter hit a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left and then stole the inbound pass to lift the Phoenix Mercury past the Minnesota Lynx yesterday, 81-78. The Mercury overcame the poor shooting of its top two scorers -- Diana Taurasi (4 for 16) and Pondexter (5 for 14) -- to win for the sixth time in the last nine outings. Taurasi was limited by foul trouble, and Pondexter picked up her fifth with 6:41 to play.

College football

St. Francis (Pa.) All-American wide receiver Michael Caputo (Seton-La Salle) has been named the top offensive player in the Northeast Conference by Street & Smith's, in the publication's annual preseason yearbook, which goes on sale Tuesday.

Pro football

Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson agreed to a three-year contract extension through 2009 yesterday. The Bears also signed receiver Alex Bannister to a one-year contract and released cornerback Chris Thompson and wide receivers C.J. Fayton and Mark Philmore.

Golf

In Endicott, N.Y., the rising Susquehanna River inundated En-Joie Golf Club yesterday, forcing crews to play a waiting game just to assess the damage to the course that hosts the B.C. Open.

Horse racing

Off Duty led wire to wire to win the $45,750 featured allowance race yesterday at Churchill Downs.

&#149 Sir Halory rallied for a half-length victory over Organizer in the $46,000 allowance feature at Belmont Park yesterday.

Soccer

Clint Dempsey, back from the World Cup, set up Taylor Twellman in the 22nd minute, as the New England Revolution snapped a seven-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas yesterday.

Track & field

Dwain Chambers tied for second place in the 100 meters at the European Cup yesterday, competing for Britain for the first time in nearly three years after serving a two-year doping suspension. France's Ronald Pognon won in 10.13 seconds, with Chambers and Russia's Andrey Yepishin finishing in 10.19.

Wrestling

Pitt-Johnstown has signed 15 recruits for the 2006-07 season, including 2006 Class AAA Pennsylvania state runner-up at heavyweight, Chris Dempsey (Ambridge). UPJ also added six other state place winners to this upcoming season's roster.
