The Washington Wild Things game against the Traverse City Beach Bums was suspended in the middle of the second inning because of rain with the Beach Bums leading, 2-1. The game will be completed when the Wild Things travel to Traverse city for a three-game series July 26-28. The Wild Things begin a three-game series against the Evansville Otters tonight. College basketball The College of Charleston hired Gregg Marshall as its men’s basketball coach yesterday, hoping he can help the Cougars again become a prominent mid-major program. Pro basketball In Phoenix, Cappie Pondexter hit a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left and then stole the inbound pass to lift the Phoenix Mercury past the Minnesota Lynx yesterday, 81-78. The Mercury overcame the poor shooting of its top two scorers — Diana Taurasi (4 for 16) and Pondexter (5 for 14) — to win for the sixth time in the last nine outings. Taurasi was limited by foul trouble, and Pondexter picked up her fifth with 6:41 to play. College football St. Francis (Pa.) All-American wide receiver Michael Caputo (Seton-La Salle) has been named the top offensive player in the Northeast Conference by Street & Smith’s, in the publication’s annual preseason yearbook, which goes on sale Tuesday. Pro football Chicago Bears running back Adrian Peterson agreed to a three-year contract extension through 2009 yesterday.
